## Innovative School Program

Math, science, and technology are critical pathways to develop learners who can solve problems in a flexible manner. Earhart Math, Science, Technology with integration of Music students will develop the foundational skill to compete in a global society. Curriculum at each grade level & in each of the disciplines, math, science & technology include critical teaching practices that will be integrated throughout the math, science & technology & music instruction. These include:

♥ Vocabulary routines: explicit teaching of the content vocabulary & language of the discipline.

♥ Integration of technology in the teacher’s presentation of the lesson to provide a basis for common prior knowledge, build the skill level & for content enhancement.

♥ Use of technology by students to reinforce learning, expand the content knowledge & reinforce skills learned.

♥ Music integration used to learn & reinforce skills, vocabulary, build context & content knowledge & performance skills.

### Lesson Examples

Kindergarten

♥ *Math* – Students will be introduced to a variety of math concepts & experiences in all math strands. Organized around the strands of math instruction [algebra, number sense, geometry, measurement, data analysis, & spatial reasoning], the activities provide a series of challenges in ascending difficulty & complexity.

♥ *Science* – Students will be introduced to science vocabulary, & practice observing, collecting data, & analyzing data. The science lesson at the kindergarten level provides an activity-rich lesson that aligns to the mission & vision by providing opportunities for prediction, observation, data gathering, & new vocabulary in a kindergarten- friendly format. The joy of the exploration & the experiential learning provide a foundation for children to explore & observe their environments beyond the school day.

♥ *Technology* – Technology instruction at the kindergarten level is integrated across the disciplines. Student-specific instruction will be delivered in specific “access” tools such as mouse manipulation & touch pad skills so all children will have a common foundation of skill to access learning support programs.

Grade 1

♥ *Math* – The lesson builds a foundation for number sense & fact automaticity. Using the triangle format, the teacher first shows the children a fact family then gives the children three numbers in a fact family. Students will memorize the math facts, begin to experience inverse operations, & practice decomposition/re-composition of numbers when finding the sum of doubles.

♥ *Science* – The science lesson at the first grade level provides an activity-rich lesson that aligns to the mission & vision by providing opportunities for prediction, observation, & new vocabulary in a first grade-friendly format. Students will practice using thermometers, record data, & practice data analysis. They will review the water cycle, apply learned knowledge about water habitats & apply prior knowledge to their understanding of the Bay.

♥ *Technology* – Technology instruction at the first grade level is integrated through teacher use of the document camera, video clips, & immediate web access for visual understanding in the two lesson examples.

Grade 2

♥ *Math* – Students will understand & practice the concept of regrouping with tens & ones. Multiple strategies of instruction are modeled by the teacher during the instructional lesson including direct instruction, modeling, individual response, questioning,

& the use of musical & rhythmic connections to math. The music lesson reinforces the classroom instruction & connects the importance of patterning in both music & math.

♥ *Science* – The science lesson at the second grade level provides an activity rich lesson that aligns to the mission & vision by providing opportunities for prediction, observation, & new vocabulary development in a second grade friendly format. The skills of observation & exploration provide the scientific foundation for the children to explore & observe their environment beyond the school day. Students will define & understand erosion & relate it to the rock cycle. Students will become familiar with different types of rock based on their observable characteristics.

♥ *Technology* – Technology as an instructional tool at the second level is integrated through teacher use of interactive white board technology & video both for viewing & as a tool for recording student work & producing a photo story.

Grade 3

♥ *Math* – Multiplication is motivating for third graders & yet a challenge until they have the solid foundation learned by using manipulatives to create arrays.

The work with constructing arrays at the third grade level using many different manipulatives presents a math activity that engages students & aligns to the mission & vision by providing thinking,

reasoning, & problem solving activities in a visually supportive third grade format. Students will develop a familiarity with multiples, deepen their understanding of multiplication, experience the commutative property of multiplication in a concrete format, recognize the relationship between multiplication & its inverse property of division, & have the opportunity to see the relationship between numbers & geometry.

♥ *Science* – The science lesson at the third grade level provides an activity rich lesson that aligns to the mission & vision by providing observational skills

& new vocabulary in a third grade-friendly format. The skills of observation are modeled & demonstrated to provide the scientific foundation for the child to explore & observe their environment beyond the school day. Students will be able to identify the phases of the moon using the appropriate science vocabulary. They will apply their knowledge of fractions to the phases of the moon,

differentiate between rotation & revolution, & practice the skills of observation, data collection, & analysis.

♥ *Technology* – Technology as instructional tool at the third grade level is integrated through teacher use of video both for viewing & as a tool for recording student work into a newscast in the two lesson examples. Student specific instruction will be delivered in use of a Flip video camera, create a photo story, keyboarding, MS Word applications, & the printing & publishing of their work. As students are introduced to research using the web, they will also learn to evaluate their resources for appropriateness.

Grade 4

♥ *Math* – Students will understand the importance of decomposition as a method of solving multiplication problems, associating decomposition with the use of partial products in the traditional algorithm, & will be able to visually illustrate multiplication with partial products using the generic rectangle. Differentiating for groups of students by having a variety of instructional experiences to scaffold the activity for children provides each child with the structural support to be successful. Multiple strategies of instruction are modeled by the teacher during the instructional lesson including video presentation, direct instruction, modeling, student modeling, group response, questioning, & the use of music & rhythm to build vocabulary of the discipline.

♥ *Science* – The lesson on electricity begins with a video clip showing the basic make-up of an atom & that electricity is the flow of electrons.

Using the foundation of prior knowledge of magnetism, the teacher demonstrates the push & pull of positive & negative forces using a heavy rubber band under the document camera. The science lesson at the fourth grade level on electricity provides an activity & simulation-rich lesson that aligns to the mission & vision by providing foundational knowledge, observation, & vocabulary in a fourth grade- friendly format. Students will understand the make-up of the atom & the charges of the subatomic particles. They will apply their knowledge of equilibrium to the positive & negative charges of the subatomic particles to understand why electrons move along a conductor, creating current electricity.

♥ *Technology* – Technology as an instructional tool at the fourth grade level is integrated through teacher use of video both for viewing short clips

& the use of a computer-based activities as reinforcement for the concepts taught. Student-specific instruction includes the use of video cameras, MS Movie Maker, YouTube, keyboarding, MS Word applications & publishing software. As students are introduced to research using the web, they also learn to evaluate resources for appropriateness. Content reinforcement in math will include Math Mansions, Make & Break parts 1 & 2, Eduplace Math, & Find a Friend-the Distributive Property of Multiplication. Science content support will include Discovery Education, Magic School Bus, video clips, including Molecules the Building Blocks of Life, & the NSTA site for online articles.

Grade 5

♥ *Math* – The work with equivalent fractions at the fifth grade level using many different manipulatives presents a math activity that engages students & aligns to the mission & vision by providing thinking, reasoning, & problem solving activities in a visually supportive format. Multiple strategies of instruction are modeled by the teacher during the instructional lesson including video presentation of the concept, direct instruction, modeling,

group response, questioning, & the use of music & music notation to build connections to math. Students will be able to recognize multiple representations of one whole in order to make equivalent fractions.

♥ *Science* – Students are fascinated with the states of matter. Using a simulation with the students’ bodies as manipulatives builds coherence & memory of key concepts when teaching complex concepts such as the effect of phase changes on molecular motion. This science lesson at the fifth grade level provides a simulation lesson that aligns to the mission & vision by providing an opportunity to not only observe, but also to experience the movement of the molecules as heat is added. Students will understand the relationship between heat energy, kinetic energy, molecular motion, & phase changes.

♥ *Technology* – Technology as an instructional tool at the fifth grade level is integrated through teacher use of video both for viewing short clips & the use of a document camera to emphasize & give visual access the concepts taught. Student-specific instruction includes the use of video cameras, keyboarding, MS Word applications, 2.0 tools such as blogs, Google apps, video conferencing, Skype, & printing & publishing their work.
