Amelia Earhart Elementary School is the largest K-5 grade school in the City of Alameda, supporting a student population of nearly 600 students. In 2012, the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) began funding an Earhart Innovative Program to support Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) as a model for other district-wide program innovations.

Since that time, Earhart Elementary has been recognized for its student achievement levels, being awarded the California Distinguished Schools award and the National Blue Ribbon Award on multiple occasions. In 2020, Earhart was again recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School due to its innovative STEAM program.

Regrettably, during the 2022-23 school year, changes in state funding and AUSD priorities led the Board to cut the funding that supported Earhart’s STEAM program. Their plan to gradually phase out District resources will result in a 74% reduction of funding dedicated to this nationally recognized science program. Without PTA funding, our school will no longer be able to support a dedicated Science Teacher, and Science at Earhart will look very different.

Earhart Elementary is a diverse campus with a majority of students from ethnic minority backgrounds, fostering inclusivity and cross-cultural learning. To support the science program, the Parent Teacher Association partners with the school administration to raise up to  substantial funding, annually, to support dedicated STEAM lab and teacher position.
